He specialises in Estate Law (Deceased and Insolvent), Trust administration and Trust Planning, Divorce Liquidations, Arbitration and investigative work in the regulatory field. Since being admitted as an attorney in 1981, he’s enjoyed a career spanning decades and most fields of law. Prior to joining Gildenhuys Malatji Attorneys Inc in 1995 as a Director, Derik co-founded the law firm De Villiers De Beer Inc in 1983 (which firm still practices under that name and style in Pretoria).

Derik has played an active part in many high-profile investigations and prosecutions, acting as the chief investigating officer in the first perverse incentive prosecution of radiologists and referring doctors, initiated by the Health Professions Council of South Africa. He has also been involved more recently in prosecuting the first case of ethical transgression involving biological and chemical warfare, also on behalf of the HPCSA.

In addition to his investigative and litigation work, he serves on the panel of the Master for taking court appointments to act as Trustee and/or curator bonis. Derik is also often appointed by the President of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces to act as a divorce liquidator, and as a member of the Association of Arbitrators of Southern Africa is often appointed to act as Arbitrator. Due to his interest in sports law, he has also become involved in both litigation and dispute resolution in that sphere of law. Derik serves as a member of the Disciplinary Committee of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces for the past 15 years.
